The Maverick Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) Director is a strategic leader responsible for overseeing all health, safety, and environmental initiatives within the company's oil and gas operations. Reporting directly to the Vice President of HSE, they develop and implement HSE policies, procedures, and programs to ensure compliance with regulations and industry standards while fostering a culture of safety and environmental stewardship. By providing regular reports and updates to the VP-HSE, the HSE Director ensures alignment with corporate HSE strategies and facilitates informed decision-making. They also collaborate with internal stakeholders, coordinate cross-functional HSE activities, and represent the company's HSE interests with external stakeholders, contributing to the achievement of corporate HSE goals and objectives.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be able to excel at the following:

  • Team Leadership and Management:
    • Lead and manage a team of HSE professionals, providing guidance, coaching, and support to ensure high performance and alignment with organizational goals.
    • Set clear expectations, goals, and objectives for HSE team members, fostering a collaborative and results-oriented work environment.
    • Allocate resources, assign responsibilities, and oversee the execution of HSE initiatives and projects to ensure timely and effective delivery.
  • Talent Development and Succession Planning:
    • Identify skill gaps and development needs within the HSE team and implement strategies for skills enhancement and professional growth.
    • Conduct performance evaluations, provide constructive feedback, and recognize achievements to motivate and retain top talent.

  • Develop and implement HSE policies and procedures:
    • Design, update, and communicate HSE policies and procedures in alignment with regulatory requirements, industry standards, and corporate objectives.
    • Ensure that HSE policies and procedures are effectively implemented across all levels of the organization.
  • Regulatory Compliance:
    • Stay abreast of relevant HSE regulations, standards, and guidelines.
    • Ensure compliance with local, state, federal, and international HSE regulations and requirements.
    • Interface with regulatory agencies as necessary and manage permitting processes.
  • Risk Management:
    • Identify potential HSE risks and hazards associated with oil and gas operations.
    • Develop and implement risk assessment and mitigation strategies.
    • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of risk management initiatives.
  • Incident Management and Investigation:
    • Establish and maintain incident reporting and investigation procedures.
    • Lead investigations into HSE incidents, near misses, and accidents to determine root causes and prevent recurrence.
    • Develop and implement corrective and preventive actions based on investigation findings.
  • Training and Awareness:
    • Develop and deliver HSE training programs for employees, contractors, and other stakeholders.
    • Promote HSE awareness and accountability throughout the organization.
    • Conduct periodic audits and inspections to assess compliance and identify training needs.
  • Emergency Preparedness and Response:
    • Develop and maintain emergency response plans for various scenarios, including spills, leaks, fires, and natural disasters.
    • Coordinate with internal teams and external stakeholders to ensure effective emergency response capabilities.
    • Conduct drills and exercises to test emergency response readiness.
  • Performance Monitoring and Reporting:
    • Establish HSE performance metrics and KPIs.
    • Monitor and analyze HSE performance data to identify trends and areas for improvement.
    • Prepare and present regular reports on HSE performance to senior management.
  • Stakeholder Engagement:
    • Liaise with internal stakeholders, including operations, engineering, and management teams, to integrate HSE considerations into business processes.
    • Engage with external stakeholders, including government agencies, industry groups, and community organizations, to foster positive relationships and address concerns.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have the following experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or related field. Advanced degree preferred.
  • Extensive experience (10+ years) in HSE management, with a focus on the oil and gas industry.
  • In-depth knowledge of HSE regulations, standards, and best practices relevant to the oil and gas sector.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to influence and engage stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
  • Proven experience in developing and implementing HSE policies, programs, and procedures.
  • Experience in incident investigation, risk management, and emergency response planning.
  • Professional certifications such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or equivalent are desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive continuous improvement and achieve measurable results in HSE performance.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with a strong attention to detail.

Techincal Knowledge:

  • Utilize in-depth technical knowledge of oil and gas operations, processes, and equipment to identify HSE risks, hazards, and control measures.
  • Provide technical guidance and expertise to HSE team members and other stakeholders on complex HSE issues, ensuring accurate interpretation and application of technical standards and best practices.
  • Stay abreast of emerging technologies, innovations, and industry trends related to HSE management in the oil and gas sector, and assess their applicability and potential impact on company operations.
